Jean Stockwell's work principally uses the mediums of photography, 3D and installation to explore traditional or overlooked objects and materials by a process of transformation and juxtaposition. Research into both the history of objects and where appropriate, the site, uncovers political and social themes.
Experimentation with objects and materials is an important part of the process, often recorded photographically. Odd juxtapositions are created, opening the door for a creative response, sometimes eliciting a sense of humour. The work involves  handmaking skills, or is a considered arrangement of objects.
There is a preoccupation with previous industrial eras before the dominance of information technology, including the machine age and the advent of mass production. An interest persists in how the passage of time alters the perception of traditional objects and materials.
